White Sage Meaning & Uses
White Sage is the most sacred smudging herb in North American Indigenous traditions. Its silvery leaves carry potent medicinal smoke proven to clear airborne bacteria — the supreme purifier.
What it smells like
Strong, camphoraceous, medicinal and deeply herbal with earthy undertones. Bold and unmistakable.
Spiritual meaning
The supreme purifier. Clears negative entities and energetic residue from spaces and the aura.
Emotional
Clears emotional residue. Lifts depression and anxiety. Creates a clean emotional slate.
Body, and what the evidence says
Traditionally burned to cleanse the air of a space. Lab studies of sage smoke have found it can reduce airborne bacteria for a time, but smoke itself irritates the lungs, so ventilate well.
How to burn it
- Light tip and blow out flame
- Fan smoke throughout the space
- Counterclockwise for clearing, clockwise for blessing
- Open a window to allow stagnant energy to exit
Rituals and uses
- Space clearing
- Aura cleansing
- Before meditation
- New home blessing
- New moon ceremonies
History
Used for millennia by Indigenous peoples of the American Southwest in ceremony and healing.
Safety and sourcing
Use in ventilated spaces and never around birds. White sage is sacred to many Indigenous peoples and is over-harvested in the wild; buy cultivated sage from Indigenous-owned or ethical growers, or use garden sage, cedar or rosemary instead.
All incense and smudging produce fine smoke particles. Burn in a ventilated room, avoid daily use in small closed spaces, and take extra care around children, pets, birds and anyone with asthma.
